The new VDE websites are just as future-oriented as the association itself
The relaunch, which was based on the content management system (CMS) CoreMedia 8, was necessary because the old websites were not optimized for mobile devices and were visually outdated. And since the service provider was also responsible for hosting the new CMS, the VDE opted to go with Arvato Systems. The company operates an ISO 27001-certified data center and, as a CoreMedia Platinum Partner, offers a single-source solution for all services: from creation and implementation through to hosting and operation and application management.
VDE was looking for a CMS with a web-based editorial system and integrated page preview included in the editor. To enable a simplified exchange of data, it was necessary for the system be able to be connected via interfaces to third party systems. It was also important to be able to flexibly expand the system as needed. A powerful taxonomy-based search function was also required to better support visitors to the website.
In addition to the visually very appealing results achieved, we particularly appreciate the commitment that Arvato Systems has shown with regard to this project. This made it possible for the very short implementation deadline to be met – going from the completion of the contract to the go-live in just 6 months.Martin Brenner, Head IT Applications, VDE Services GmbH
The project‘s particular challenge was its tight schedule: Only nine months were allotted for everything from covering the initial talks to the planned go-live – and Arvato Systems had to contractually guarantee they would meet the deadline. To achieve this, the relaunch was implemented step-by-step manner: first designing everything, then implementing it, and then addressing application management.
During the initial creation phase, Arvato Systems first performed a gap analysis in order to identify and revise the missing elements to achieve the desired mobile suitability of the websites. This was followed by the adaptation of the Fluid-UX design using the existing specifications while at the same time coming up with the finely tuned IT concept. During the implementation phase, the core team, which consisted of 15 developers and CMS experts as well as four designers and four hosting experts each, worked on the responsive implementation of the templates using modern front end designs. In addition, various interfaces for the automated processing and presentation of official bodies, norms, standards, events and publications were implemented in the webshop linked to the system. Social media content can now also be integrated into the website by the editors. Arvato Systems‘ project-specific services also included the training of around 100 editors as well as on-site editorial support. After meeting the go-live deadline, Arvato Systems continued to develop the CMS further as part of several subsequent releases and, among other things, made editorial tasks easier, adapted the system to the revised corporate design and implemented extended search and filter functions (e.g. the addition of a dictionary, events and publications). A service desk is also currently being established as part of an AMS contract.
VDE‘s editors benefit above all from the high level of user-friendliness and the intuitive usability of the web-based CMS.
Integration to third-party systems
Thanks to integrated interfaces to various third-party systems, such as the contact and events databases, they can always keep their websites up to date.
