Innovative Warehouse Solutions from Arvato Systems
The increasing dynamism of the ‘on-demand’ world has meant that logistics is also changing. The environment is determined by ever-decreasing order quantities, while the frequency of deliveries is increasing. Optimal warehouse utilization, efficient stock rotations, increased speed, and enhanced transparency are becoming increasingly important given the increasingly integrated business world.
Modern, complex warehouse and distribution centers as well as warehouses held by SMEs need far more than the classic basic functions of a warehouse management system: Support for goods receipt and issue, stock management, and inventory management as well as advanced functions for controlling complex processes such as return processing or multi-customer warehouses are increasingly in demand.
For around 30 years now, companies have been using software-based warehouse management systems (WMS) to support logistics. These systems enable the mapping and management of all internal material and information flows, from goods receipt, storage, redistribution and relocation right through to goods issue.
SAP EWM (Extended Warehouse Management)
Warehouse management in the age of Industry 4.0
SAP has been offering SAP EWM as a component of SAP Supply Chain Management (SAP SCM), a proven and future-proof warehouse management solution with a performance capability that significantly exceeds the previously (and still) available LES (Logistics Execution System) SAP module, for several years.
SAP EWM is the most cutting-edge warehouse management software for your entire supply chain – use it to interlink and control all workflows along your logistics chain in a single system. The main components – warehouse management and material flow control in SAP MFS (SAP Material Flow System) – support you in a flexible, automated way in processing all movements of goods as well as managing your inventories through to the warehouse level.
SAP EWM allows you to benefit from efficient wave planning for your picking processes and storage and removal strategies for optimal utilization, as well as flexible processes through process- and layout-oriented warehouse management, including a warehouse management monitor. A forklift control system, the handling unit management, and material flow control (MFC), which does away with the need for a separate material flow computer, are fully integrated.
Moreover, through the association with SAP SCM, SAP EWM makes it possible to achieve in-depth integration in supply chain planning, collaboration, and supply chain visibility.
Due to its modular structure, SAP EWM is suitable for the automated control of large logistics centers as well as for smaller warehouses. Arvato Systems has also developed additional modules for special applications:
Powerful features and tools
Integrated material flow system
It is possible to communicate directly with memory-programmable controls without middleware, and thereby control material flows in this way with the help of the integrated material flow system in EWM. Typical applications for this are controlling conveyor belt technology for automated mini-load sections to stacker cranes.
Simple and intuitive operation
We offer our clients clear, understandable, and structured collection and evaluation options, from standard through to proprietary Fiori applications.
Process- and layout-oriented warehouse management
This standard EWM function makes it possible to define dynamic warehouse management. The management can be related to the process or the layout. During process control, individual process steps, such as quality reviews, payments, and processing in goods receipt or issue, are dynamically supplemented or eliminated. The layout control is related to the warehouse topology and can, for instance, map switches in means of transport during storage or removal.
Mobile processes with the Mobisys Solution Builder
The technologies we have integrated for mobile data collection also include the SAP-certified MSB Mobisys Solution Builder ABAP Add-On from our partner Mobisys GmbH. Mobisys’ key competency is in developing SAP add-ons for directly integrating mobile processes into SAP (LES, EWM, PP, PM, ITSmobile, CRM, BI). The company’s MSB® product line provides an integration platform that mobile users can use to quickly and easily map SAP processes and implement them.
SAP Warehouse Management (WM)
The SAP Warehouse Management (WM) solution provides proven support in the processing of all internal movements of goods and managing inventories in the warehouse.
Arvato Systems has been successfully working for many years to optimize and implement internal and external client requirements for warehouse management, and can now make use of a wide range of additional functions. However it is worth considering a switch to SAP EWM.
Discontinuation of the rights of use for SAP WM
SAP will discontinue the rights of use for the Warehouse Management (WM) software component at the end of 2025. As such, SAP WM clients must decide whether to operate the successor product, SAP Extended Warehouse Management (SAP EWM), independently or to switch to SAP S4/HANA with integrated EWM components.
Arvato Systems supports you in evaluating your existing and future system landscape, including business processes, and in migrating from SAP WM to EWM. We have developed an agile, highly efficient method for doing so. Last but not least, you will also receive reliable calculation and planning (duration, cooperation, and budget) for your EWM rollout.
It’s time to turn to SAP EWM! Take advantage of our experience to make the switch securely.
Value Center EWM – Services and benefits
Rolling out SAP EWM typically requires a comprehensive theoretical concept. Following the migration from WM to EWM in keeping with the Arvato Systems Factory approach, the SAP EWM specialists from our Value Center identify and tap new business potential together with your team.

Arvato is a leading logistics provider, operating over 750,000 square meters of storage space worldwide. Arvato Systems is familiar with and fulfills the special requirements of the logistics industry. The expertise that we constantly gain from internal Group projects also benefits our external clients – we can look back on over 200 successfully completed warehouse projects in SAP WM and SAP EWM.
Arvato Systems can provide support with logistics consulting, from design, to implementation, training, and go-live, through to subsequent process optimization or system and application support, depending on client requirements and requests.
WM warehouse billing
This proprietary Arvato product can be used to automatically determine and calculate warehouse utilization and services in the warehouse. This usage calculation can be carried out in several different ways: as an average, by maximum use, from the beginning of the period regarding goods receipt, through to precise, to-the-day observation. It can relate to space determination as well as silo usage for bulk goods.
WM cold chain control and reporting
This additional function can be used to document the full maintenance of cold chains for materials that need to be cooled. This reporting discloses the holding times of handling units or warehouse units in defined temperature zones in a detailed or aggregated way, and can proactively issue warnings when threshold values are being approached.
